The Academy of International Studies’ leader, Ms. Willett, is recruiting students for next year. Early decision is February 24th and regular decision is March 24th.

Students should apply to the Academy of International Studies (AIS), because when they graduate they receive an AIS certificate of completion with a golden seal.

“The AIS helps students understand the worldview beyond their own. Students are taught how to handle tough discussions properly,” Ms. Willett says. The Academy of International Studies encourages students to expand their communication skills and become more involved.

AIS is considered a school within a school. Ideally, students are expected to join starting their freshman year but students are able to apply to join at any grade level. 100 students are accepted per grade level.

Students are expected to complete a total of 120 hours of community service in addition to completing specific transcript requirements for AIS completion. 80 hours of that service are meant to be spent locally and 40 are spent internationally.

The Academy of International Studies mission statement is: To seek growth in understanding our identities and those of others to empower students with skills to become global citizens.

The Academy of International Studies is located on the Independence High School campus in the 400 building. Applications for the academy can be found on the AIS website: http://ihsacademyofinternationalstudies.weebly.com/
