Independence High School – Charlotte, N.C.

Independence juniors students took the ACT on March 1st at Independence High School. Those participating juniors got their scores back over Spring Break, on March 31st. Many students are satisfied on their results but some are not so happy with their scores.

The scores are meant to represent what the student knows and how ready they are for a college level. The ACT is a college-entry test required by many colleges and universities but the score is also a chance to win merit-based scholarships from college depending on the score.

Many students were asked at Independence High about how they felt about the test and their results and many say they wish they could’ve done better. Ron Gibson took the test at Independence and received a 23. “It wasn’t easy, and there was a lot of guessing because they were hard, but I tried my best.” He encourages upcoming ACT takers to take advantage  of the opportunity, to take it seriously and take your time but work efficiently.

There is a lot of pressure on students to get a good score, but Alexis Shirey, a pupil at Independence, believes that “scores shouldn’t define who they are.”  Meaning students could score the lowest and highest in something but be the total opposite of what the numbers say. A number, although important for some things, does not define who you are as a person.

For those readers who are taking the ACT in the coming years, or re-taking the ACT in the coming months, here are some tips for taking the ACT:

  • Answer all the questions
  • Get enough sleep
  • Eat before the test
  • Don’t overthink a lot of questions
  • Take the ACT prep to help have better outcomes
  • If the outcome is a fail, take it again!

If you are looking to take the test again, or would like more information see the ACT or SAT websites (listed below) or see Ms. Owings in 403. See more about the ACT in Ashlee Hilton’s article “Tips for Taking the ACT coming up March 1.”
