Independence High School – Charlotte, N.C.

Recently students from Independence High School have been signing up to teach reading to 3rd graders from J.H. Gunn Elementary School. The sessions will start on the week of February 22nd.

The North Star Reading Partners program was started to help get third graders to their appropriate reading levels, and prepare them to read like pros in the years to come. The program plans to achieve this goal by having high school students come out and help, encourage, and teach those third graders to read at or above the levels they need to.

“Our students’ motivation and desire to read has grown tremendously since implementing this amazing reading program,” said Ms. Gaudio, the leader of this effort at Independence, during the informational meeting. Ms. Gaudio feels like the program was an excellent idea and has had an amazing outcome on the students so far.

The Information meeting  for the program took place on Thursday, February 18 at 5 p.m. Even if someone missed the meeting they can still sign up to help out in the Media Center.
